Paul E. Tsongas Congressional Collection Digitization Project

In 2009 the UML Libraries' Center for Digital Scholarship began the process of preparing the Tsongas Congressional Collection for digitization. This effort culminated in a Library Services and Technology Act (LSTA) grant, "Digitizing Historical Resources", awarded to UMass Lowell Libraries from the Massachusetts Board of Library Commissioners (MBLC) in 2010 for FY 2011.

The grant money provided allowed UMass Lowell Libraries to scan over 10,000 documents from the Tsongas Congressional Collection as well as materials from several related collections, such as transcribed oral histories from Lowell residents associated with Tsongas's political career, Lowell Historical Building Surveys, and Neighborhood Architectural Surveys. To date, material scanned in this project amounts to over 34,000 pages of historical documents related to Tsongas's life of public service.
