INFORMATION FOR GRADUATE STUDENTS
![]()
The University of Massachusetts Lowell Libraries has a number of resources available to assist you with your graduate research.
Your most important resource will be:
SciFinder Scholar: Access to the complete Chemical Abstracts database from 1907-, covering over 9600 chemical journals, plus patents, dissertations and books. Available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, except for early Sunday morning. SciFinder Scholar is already set up in the Chemistry research labs on campus as well as being available on any Library PC via installed software. It is also available from your home PC via a PPP (dialup) account. It cannot be used with our Proxyserver. Download instructions for the necessary software here. Be sure and download SciFinder Scholar2006. For a tutorial, click here.
Other helpful sources include:

The computer catalog should be checked for books on your subject. If we do not own the book you want, check the Virtual Catalog, which provides access to collections from many schools in this area. If you find the book you want, you can order it and it will be sent to the Library of your choice. You may have it for 30 days--this service is quite rapid, as it is all automated. If you cannot find the book you want in the Virtual Catalog, check our WorldCat. This database is a comprehensive listing of all books and journals located anywhere in the world. It covers approximately 45 MILLION items. If you locate your item there, and it is available in any US library, you may fill out an Interlibrary Loan request and we will do our best to supply the book.
If you have a citation to a journal article, first check the UML E-journal list to see if it is available in any of our databases. We have access to over 26,000 electronic journals. Most e-collections begin in the mid-90's but a few major ones go back much further. If the journal is in the UML e-journal list, but the year you want is not covered, or it is not listed at all, check our computer catalog as we have many older journals in our collection. If we do not own the journal in any format, you may request an Interlibrary Loan. Fill out the form and submit it. If you have another request, after submission, use the BACK button on your browser, and you will not have to fill in your identifying information again. Almost all journal articles are delivered electronically; we notify you of arrival via automated e-mail. Interlibrary Loan takes 2-3 weeks, so plan ahead.
UML's Dissertations Database will give you a list of all UML theses and dissertations in chemistry. ProQuest's Dissertations Abstracts will allow you to search all dissertations since 1870. For recent dissertations, you may access the first 24 pages of any dissertation. Copies of all UML theses 1998- are free on ProQuest's site.
