Computer Science & Bio/ChemInformatics Information Libraries
There are a number of sources available on the Library WEB page which can be searched for Computer Science and Bioinformatics topics. To access databases from home, begin at the Library home page and click on "Remote Users Start Here". Follow instructions on the page, and all databases will be usable, as long as the browser window remains open. If you have a dial-up modem, the University will supply free dial-up service. Just apply for a PPP account. The entire Northeastern Massachusetts area from Tyngsboro to Quincy is included in this PPP service.
A brand new service is our LinkSource. Look for the icon when searching in any database. Click on the icon and it will check ALL our full-text resources to see if the article you are interested in is available at UML. Linksource gives you a direct link to the article if possible.
Important Electronic resources available to you:
Safari Tech Books: A number of important e-books from O'Reilly Publishers are available on this site, including How-To books in both programming and applications, from computer languages to graphics and desktop publishing.
Knovel: 480 full-text handbooks on all fields of science and engineering.
ScienceDirect This service offers FULL CONTENT of 1200 Elsevier Press journals, from 1995- Includes some major computer science material and bioinformatics titles. Try their free alerting service.
Wiley Interscience journals: This service offers FULL CONTENT for about 340 journals published by Wiley from 1997- All sciences are covered.
Math Sci-Net. Major math database, offering reviews of math and computer science materials. Citations and reviews only, no full text.IEEExplore This service indexes all IEEE journals and conference proceedings. We have FULL-TEXT access to the Journal titles (1998- ) and many of the conferences. Older journals and conference proceedings are available in our library's book collection. Consult the computer catalog to locate them.
Compendex: Engineering database with much good material in fields related to Computer Science and Bioinformatics. Includes good indexing for IEEE materials. Links available to full content of Elsevier journals and to other Open Access journals.
Biological Sciences A new comprehensive database from Cambridge Scientific Abstracts. Search entire database or just a relevant portion. Offers citations and abstracts only.
SciFinder Scholar: Access to the complete Chemical Abstracts database from 1907-, covering over 8,000 chemical and biological journals, plus patents, dissertations and books. Good site for information on gene sequence articles. Available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, except for early Sunday morning. SciFinder Scholar is already set up in many of the research labs on campus as well as being available on any Library PC via installed software. Download instructions for the necessary software here. If you wish to search SciFinder from home, you must have a PPP account. [EZProxy will not work with SciFinder]
Dissertation Abstracts covers nearly all dissertations done in this country. Our Library has an agreement allowing you to download a complete UML dissertation, 1998- if available. To obtain dissertations from other institutions, request via Interlibrary Loan. Up to three dissertations will be supplied free--additional dissertations may be ordered through ILL at cost (36.00).
- Silverplatter Generally has citations and abstracts only, with a little full text as noted. To search a specific database, click on the link below. To search multiple databases, click on the Silverplatter link and choose the specific databases you wish to search.
- Applied Science and Technology Full Text This database has some full text.
- General Science Abstracts this has some full-text.
American Chemical Society Journals. FULL CONTENT for 28 titles from the Americqn Chemical Society, including Biochemistry, and Journal of Chemical Information and Computer Science. Complete backfiles for all titles are included.
ACM Journals Access to journals from this important computer publisher.
Annual Reviews FULL CONTENT to all of these titles which contain excellent review articles.
Infotrac or EbscoHost. These general services have many full text journals, as well as magazines such as Time and Newsweek. Good sites to keep up on the latest news.

The computer catalog (PAC) should be checked for books on your subject. Books on order will also appear in the computer catalog. All journals owned by UML are now listed here also. Journal records indicate the latest issue received, and provide links to full text journals if we are entitled to such links.
If you are looking for a book which is not owned by our library, try the Virtual Catalog. This database allows our patrons to borrow books they need from any VC participant. There are both public libraries and other large university libraries in this system. The service is fast and books may be borrowed for one 30-day period (no renewals allowed).
The UML E-Journal list has a complete listing with links for all journals for which we have e-access.
UML's Dissertations Database will give you a list of all theses and dissertations in Computer Science and related fields. It is searchable by author, title, year and department but not thesis advisor. The computer catalog also lists theses and dissertations since 1992. Theses advisors may be searched in the computer catalog.
