ASSIGNMENT 12

1. Write a search statement for each item assigned to you.  There are two statements for each student, labeled a and b. 

1a. I am interested in the gel time and viscosity for phenolic resins.

1b..What studies have been done on tissue plasminogen activator (TPA) and its reaction with fibrin.

2a. I need information on the use of starch in biodegradable plastics.

2b. I am doing research on RNA crosslinking damage caused by x-rays.

5a. I need information on vasopressin receptors, especially information on their sequencing.

5b. Has any work been done on biodegradation by the algae Cryptococcus or Fusarium?

6a. I would like information on the use of injection wells to store industrial waste, especially hazardous waste.

6b.I would like to study the relationships between cholesterol and phospholipids in cell membranes.

7a. My project is to use Langmuir-Blodgett thin films to work with optical biosensors.

7b.  I need to know if there are studies on the origins of replication in equine herpes virus (EHV).

8a. Are polyvinylchlorides (PVC's) decomposed by ultraviolet or gamma radiation?
 
8b. How is Dictyostelium discoideum (a slime mold) being used in inhibition studies of ubiquitin, a protein found in many cells.

9a. Someone wants to find information about the radical copolymerization of piperyline and styrene.

9b.We need to find information on cleaning up the toxic chemicals found at hazardous waste sites and spills.

10a. How does Chlorella vulgaris, a green alga, work in binding of heavy metals, specifically chromium and cobalt.

10b. How is polystyrene being used in the formation of liquid crystals and copolymers.

12a. Information is wanted on the termination of polyacrylamides by disproportion or coupling termination.

12b. Atrial natriuretic peptide, also called atrial natriuretic factor, is a hormone. What role does it have in large blood vessels of humans?

 

2      Use Expanded Academic Index (Infotrac) and Academic Search Premier (Ebsco) to find a citation and abstract from each database on the topic you chose in Assignment #2A (your article). [Do not use the same article from both databases]  Note: These are both POPULAR databases.

a.      Print out each citation and abstract and attach.  Highlight the keywords for your article. Cite each article. 

b.      What keywords did you use in each database?  What was your search statement?

c.     Can you obtain either article in full text format from any UML database?  If so, print off the first page of each article and identify the database from which you located it. 

d.      For each database, print off the first page of the results of your search.  Indicate which ones were helpful and which ones were on other topics.

e.From the same page of results (from each database), select one article that is NOT on your topic.  Explain why it was retrieved

3      Using ScienceDirect and Cambridge Scientific Abstracts (Biological Sciences), locate one article on the topic you chose in Assignment 2A in each database.  [These are Scientific databases.]

   For each database:

a. What keywords/search terms did you use?  

b. Highlight the keywords for your article

c. Print off the citation, abstract, and first page of the article (if available in full text). Cite the article.

d. If no articles are available, explain why.

3.  Locate a scientific article on your topic on which the popular article was based.

a. Print off the citation and  abstract for the article.  

b. Cite article.

c. What keywords did you use to find this article?

d. Explain why you chose this article.  Is this article properly reflected in your popular press article?
