Analytical/Environmental
Chemistry Information
There are a number of sources available on the Library WEB page which can be searched for Analytical and Environmental Chemistry topics.
The University has a site-wide subscription to RefWorks, a web-based bibliographic management tool. Sign up for your own account at Refworks This service is available both on and off campus. If off-campus, use the code RWUMASSL, and you will be able to log in to your account. Refworks stores all your citations and can create a bibliography for you in just a few minutes. This essential tool will save you a tremendous amount of time and effort.
Your most important source will be:
SciFinder Scholar: Access to the complete Chemical Abstracts database from 1907-, covering over 9,600 chemical journals, plus patents, dissertations and books. Available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, except for early Sunday morning. SciFinder Scholar is already set up in the Chemistry research labs on campus as well as being available on any Library PC via installed software. It is also available from your home PC via a PPP account. Download instructions for the necessary software here. Be sure and download SciFinder Scholar2006. For a tutorial, click here.
For Alert Services in many databases, consult the Alerts Page.
Other databases of interest:
- Compendex: Engineering database with much good material on related topics, especially practical applications.
- Biological Sciences from Cambridge Scientific. Search the entire database or select the file of interest. All areas covered, including environmental information and toxicology
- ScienceDirect This service offers FULL CONTENT of 1200 Elsevier Press journals, from 1995- Offers Alert service--register once and then login with your own individual account. You many also set up a "Favorite Journals" list in the My Profile area.
- American Chemical Society Journals FULL CONTENT for all titles from the ACS, with a complete backfile to volume 1, number 1 of each title. Offers Alert Service.
- Academic Search Premier This service has a large number of journals and many links to full text. A large Table of Contents database, EJS Journals provides access to many scientific journals hosted by EJS.
- Infotrac This general service has a few good full-text journals which are unavailable elsewhere. Worth a look.
- Annual Reviews FULL CONTENT to all of these titles, 1996- which contain excellent review articles.
- Ingenta.com Offers free alerts service, both subject and table of contents, covering 25,000 titles.
- Wiley-Interscience journals Provides access to 380 Wiley journals from 1997-
E-books:
- Knovel Provides access and searching for over 800 handbooks in all engineering and science fields. You may search for specific properties or chemicals and also search for chapters or sections of text within the handbooks. Also has interactive graphing capabilities for properties of many chemicals.
- Merck Index: Databases of chemicals and drugs, with excellent basic information.
- Handbook of Chemistry and Physics Venerable resource for all chemists, now in electronic format.
- Combined Chemical Dictionary: One electronic site to search a number of important chemical dictionaries.

The computer catalog should be checked for books on your subject. UML's Dissertations Database will give you a list of all UML theses and dissertations in chemistry up to 1985. ProQuest's Dissertations Abstracts will allow you to search all dissertations since 1870. For recent dissertations, you may access the first 24 pages of any dissertation. Copies of all UML theses 1998- are free on ProQuest's site.
