TO USE SFS at home or off campus:
* Students: Sign up for a UML PPP account. (Proxy server does not work with SciFinder).
Use the UML PPP account as your internet provider. This will allow SciFinder Scholar to connect properly.
PPP accounts are for modems only and are therefore slower. Only UML PPP accounts will work; outside PPP accounts from other ISP's such as NetZero, or AOL will not work. You may have to contact the UML Help Desk for assistance in setting this up.* Faculty and Staff: Sign up for a VPN (Virtual Private Network) Account. Contact John Ouellette, Network Operations Manager to obtain this account. Send him an email, requesting a VPN account so that you can use SciFinder Scholar at home.
At the present time, the best browser to use to connect to the VPN is Internet Explorer.
Here are the instruction files (in PDF format). Please read both documents.
Using SFS with a VPN: Explanation and how-to.
TO INSTALL SciFinder Scholar on your home computers:
To install SFS on your home PC:
Start at a networked on-campus computer and download the SFS software to a Zip drive or CD/ROM. You must be on-campus to download this software or else it will not be properly configured.
Take the zip drive/CD/ROM home, and install SFS on your home computer.
To install SFS on a laptop, connect your laptop to the campus network, download the software, and install.
If you logon to SciFinder Scholar and receive a message that all ports are in use, please wait about 15 minutes and try again. Also, please remember to completely log out of SciFinder when you are finished. If leaving SFS to go to a full-text journal, patent or web site, be aware that SFS will disconnect after 10 minutes of inactivity.
