LIBRARY INFORMATION

To
Find books on your chemical, check the PAC
(Public Access Catalog).
Do
a Subject or Guided Keyword search using a compound name or the class of compounds.
For example: morphines; terpenes.
Advice:
It is unlikely you will be able to find an entire book on your topic!
Your
most important source of information will be journal articles. There are many
ways to locate citations to articles.
- Check
the following specialized sources for citations:
- Comprehensive
Organic Syntheses 9v. REF QD 262.C535 1991
- Comprehensive
Natural Products Chemistry 9v. REF QD 415.C63 1999
- Comprehensive

- When
you have a journal citation, check the Union List of Serials or the
PAC (search by Journal title)
- ULS
lists all journals held by UML, with call numbers and locations.
- PAC lists all
journal titles, and shows current issues received, as well as other
holdings. Online versions of journals are also linked here.
- Warning:
OLDER material (previous to 1970) is in STORAGE and needs to be retrieved.
You must allow 24 hours for items to be retrieved. Fill out a STORAGE
RETRIEVAL FORM at the circulation desk.
- For
additional newer articles, try the following specialized databases:
- SciFinder
Scholar: Available 24 hours a day. Access to the Complete Chemical
Abstracts Database from 1967- User-friendly, search by name
or registry number or subject. Click on SciFinder icon on any PC in
the Library.
Silverplatter
offers the following: To search a particular database, click on its
link. To search multiple databases, click on the Silverplatter link
and choose which databases you wish to search.

- For
additional Older articles(previous to 1967), use hardcopy Chemical Abstracts.
- Determine
the correct Chemical Abstracts name for your chemical. Use the INDEX
GUIDE. Since 1967, There has been only ONE correct name for your
chemical. The older the index, the more likely it will be that the name
will be different from the Index Guide. You may have to use other sources
to get a list of synonyms for your chemical.
- Consult
the Collective Indexes of Chemical Abstracts, found on the first floor.
Use the the Subject Indexes (1917-1971) or the Chemical Substance Indexes
(1972-).
- Write
down the Volume and the abstract number of the article(s) you are interested
in. EX: 79:12345a
- Go
to the second floor and consult the correct Abstract volume, where you
will find a complete citation and abstract for the article of interest.
- Consult
the Union List of Serials or the PAC
to see if UML owns the journal. If we do not, consult the Boston
Consortium Union List of Serials to see if other schools in
our area own the journal.
For
information on other aspects of your chemical, such as uses, manufacture,
markets, etc. consult the following databases, available on the Library WEB
page.
- ProQuest
Direct:
an excellent business database, includes Boston area newspapers and
the Wall Street Journal; has much information on marketing, companies,
etc. Offers FULL-TEXT.
- Compendex:
an engineering database, good for other manufacturing details.
- Lexis-Nexis:
business database, lots of current information on industries. Offers
FULL-TEXT
- Infotrac
Web:
Offers General Business ASAP and PROMT (Predicasts Overview of Markets
and Technology).
