Albert Joe Demby, MD practiced medicine for 27 years before he took office as Vice President of Sierra Leone in March 1996 when multi-party elections ended four years of military rule. He became the principle adviser to President Tejan Kabba in his role as Vice President. He served in that capacity until 2002. During his service to Sierra Leone, the country was experiencing one of the most brutal and unspeakable rebel war in West Africa. However under leadership of their regime, with support from ECOMOG, Great Britain, and the international community, their government successfully ended the fighting with a peace accord. He presided in many of the negotiations which led to the successful end of the war. Dr. Demby has considerable knowledge on the causes of the war and its aftermath on the economic and social development of Sierra Leone.
