Using the Catalog to Search for Books

Searching for books at UML

Books at UML

Go to the UML Library Catalog

Use the Simple Search option to search by (search type is selected from the pop down menu):

  • Keyword: +media +violence +children,
  • Book Title: for whom the bell tolls,
  • Author: Shakespeare William,
  • Subject: United States History,
  • Journal Title: Journal of Research in Education

- or -

  • Use the catalog Advanced Search. This option allows you to use menus to specify which field individual search terms should be in (Author, Title, etc.) and what boolean operators should be used (AND, OR, NOT) between different search terms.
  • The resulting list of items includes locations (Lydon Stacks, O'Leary Reference, etc.), call numbers and availability.
  • Make note of the Call Number (example: TK4539.G98) and the Library Location to retrieve the book.

Books at other UMASS Libraries, Boston Library Consortium (BLC) or Regional Public Libraries

Select the Massachusetts Statewide Virtual Catalog. For more information on the Virtual Catalogs, please see our Virtual Catalog FAQ page.

  1. Enter the 16 digit number on your UML ID or Special Borrowers Card (Special Borrowers may have a number beginning with SB) as the Patron ID. You must have a valid UML library account, with no unpaid fines on your record in order to place requests.
  2. Select the search option you want (Author, Title, Subject) and enter your terms.
  3. Click on Request Item for each book you want from the list that appears and follow the directions.
