Contributing to the Archive

Contributing to the Home Movie Archive is very simple and all donations will be gratefully received. Most of our home movie footage contains ordinary people going about their daily lives. People in the movies need not be well-known and the events do not need to be remarkable in any way.

Please keep the following guidelines in mind when considering whether your submission would be appropriate:

  • We accept 8mm, Super8mm and 16mm reel-to-reel movies, VHS tapes, mini-DV tapes and DVD formats.
  • The collection will, at least initially, focus on the United States, but this does not exclude home movies of trips to other countries or domestically made films which focus on subjects which are not primarily American.
  • We will need a brief description of who took the footage, when it was made and what it includes if this information is known. We use a standard form which can be found at this link.
  • Only researchers and students will have access to the Movie Archive and must abide by standard rules of scholarship in its use. You will need to sign a general release form allowing this access.
