In the January 3, 1920 paper about the arrests, there is also a front page article about continued fighting in Russia. The Bolsheviks had not yet gained control of the country and articles like the problems of General Denikine probably lent urgency to the concern about communists.

The January 10, 1920 paper contained a rumor (not true) about a socialist revolution in Germany -- the very day of the ratification of the Treaty of Versailles. It seemed like socialists were everywhere.
