LAWRENCE TEXTILE WORKERS THROUGH THE GENERATIONS

The notes which accompany the photographs in the exhibit tell the stories which lie behind the images.  They serve to form a narrative which connects not only the photographs in each family grouping, but also one family group to another.  The photographs of the individuals and families in the exhibit forcefully remind us that local history is only a particular manifestation of much broader forces.

About the Curator

Yildiray Erdener earned his Ph.D. in Folklore / Ethnomusicology from Indiana University's Folklore Institute.  In 1988 he joined a team of scholars as a part of the "Shifting Gears" research project.  As the Scholar-in-Residence at the Lawrence Heritage State Park, he focused his research on the ways in which the meaning of work changed as workers moved from textile production to high technology plants.
