DANIEL SPENCER GILMAN COLLECTION WRITTEN BY DANIEL SPENCER
Lowell Novr 29th 1846 [To Moses, Jr.]. (...) I hardly know what to write in the way of news, which will prove interesting. (...) I had the pleasure of seeing & hearing a Lecture given by one of America’s most gifted Sons, I refer to Genl Cass of Michigan, A soldier Statesman, & Scholar. In my estimation he is a greater man by far than the Godlike Daniel Webster. The Subject of his discourse was the Progress of Society. A subject well calculated to display his knowledge of the past & of the present. I think he will be the Democratic Candidate for the next Presidency. (...) Yours truly D.S.G.
