UMass Lowell Libraries has added a subscription to all 12 INFORMS journals that is now accessible as of January 1, 2013.

The Institute for Operations Research and the Management Sciences (INFORMS) is the largest professional society in the world for professionals in the field of operations research (O.R.), management science, and business analytics.

INFORMS publishes 12 scholarly subscription journals, including the flagship journals Operations Research and Management Science.  In 2012, INFORMS began publishing its 12th journal, Service Science.

In addition, INFORMS also publishes two open-access journals: INFORMS Transactions on Education and Analytics.

What is Analytics?

Analytics is defined on the INFORMS web site as “the scientific process of transforming data into insight for making better decisions…. from wanting to know what it is and how you might use it to improve your organizational goals to applying it to a specific business problem you already have.”

Access to these journals is available by searching for the titles through UML Library’s eJournal and eBook Search Portal.

Emerald eBook Series Trial for Management and Social Sciences

Emerald Insight Publishing is proving UMass Lowell with trial access to two of their new eBook Series Collections:  Business, Management, and Economics and Social Sciences.

Access to these two collections is available until the end of December, 2011.

Emerald Business, Management, and Economics is a growing collection of more than 650 volumes from over 80 eBook Series titles in 15 subject areas. Featuring relevant, international and quality content, in many fields including strategy, economics, accounting and finance and human resource management.

Emerald Social Sciences provides online access to more than 300 volumes from over 40 book series titles. The collection features high profile, international authors delivering cutting-edge, cross-disciplinary research in the fields of education, environment, health care, language and linguistics, politics and policy and sociology and anthropology.

Access to these trials is available through the Library’s Trials and New Resources web page.

RDS Business Suite available from the MLS

The the Commonwealth of  Massachusetts through the new Massachusetts Library System (MLS) is providing regional affiliated libraries, including UMass Lowell, with access to multiple Gale Cengage online databases. The newest edition of these available resources is the RDS Business Suite.

RDS comprises three separate business information databases that can be searched through one single interface: Business & Industry, Business & Management Practices, and TableBase.

Business & Management Practices (BaMP) content focuses on practical approaches to management processes and methods. BaMP offers highly-focused coverage from more than 300 current professional and trade journals containing information relevant to the fields of management, planning, production, finance, marketing, information technology and human resources; as well as an additional 1,000+ more general business journals and newspapers.

Business & Industry (B&I) is a broad-based business information database that focuses on facts, figures, events and market information about companies, industries, products and markets.  It covers all industries and is international in scope.  B&I draws content from over 1,800 trade and industry publications, regional, national and international newspapers, business dailies and newsletters.

TableBase is a database comprised of tabular information of a strategic nature. Every record has a unique table title. Many of the table records also have textual content which supports the data in the tables.  The tables provide information such as: market share, market size, capacity, production, imports, exports, sales, product and brand rankings, forecasts, healthcare statistics and demographics.

The Massachusetts Library System (MLS) provides services to 1,700 Massachusetts libraries of all types and sizes throughout the Commonwealth.  MLS was established in 2010 to consolidate the services of six former regional library systems. An Advisory Committee agreed to renew Gale database previously subscribed for state-wide library access by the Massachusetts Board of Library Commissioners. In all MLS is providing 13 Gale databases, including the RDS Business Suite, through June 30, 2012.

Emerald launches new Beta site prior to official June release

Emerald has been working on a new site design for release in mid-June, 2010, but is allowing public access to a beta version until the official site is available: http://beta.emeraldinsight.com 

According to Emerald, the new site offers a more intuitive, user-friendly design and enhanced search and browse capabilities, the site is easier and more efficient to use. Users will be able to pinpoint research in a more efficient manner, with fewer clicks than the current platform. In addition, users will benefit from searchable journal information pages and superior site performance from quick loading pages. Conducting searches within searches, opening, using and printing documents will be easier.

Researchers can copy abstract citations directly into documents for quick referencing. Recommended reading lists of related articles, based on keyword searches, can also be viewed.

Emerald states that these changes are the first in a series of developments to be introduced throughout 2010 that will see new and enhanced features, functionality and online services including:

  • E-mail alerts and RSS
  • Reference linking
  • Marked lists
  • Help Pages
  • Document updates (PDF & HTML)
  • Authentication
