UML Libraries has just purchased online access to the 2008 2nd edition of the New Palgrave Dictionary of Economics. This is an 8-volume set available online that includes additional quarterly article updates.

Originally published in 1894 and later revised in 1923 and again as a “New” four-volume set in 1987, the Palgrave Dictionary of Economics has continuously drawn together eminent contributors from across the spectrum of methodological and ideological schools to produce an consistently valuable work of reference that has contained many individual classic essays of enduring importance.

In 2008, Palgrave Macmillan published The New Palgrave Dictionary of Economics, 2nd edition, edited by Steven N. Durlauf and Lawrence E. Blume. While some classic articles from the 1987 were retained, around 80% of the text was either entirely new or substantially rewritten to reflect the depth of change within the discipline between the editions. This new edition retains the tradition of bringing together the world’s most influential economists (including 25 Nobel Laureates in Economics) writing in their own voice on their areas of expertise, but in its online incarnation it has married this tradition with the benefits of a dynamic resource that is updated with new and revised articles on a quarterly basis.

The online edition not only provides unlimited-user access to the 8-volume print edition but does so using the full advantages of dynamic web functionality:

  • offers excellent search and browse facilities, both full text and advanced
  • contains hyperlinked cross-references within articles
  • features carefully selected and maintained links to related sites
  • enables users to bookmark searches and articles, along with their own notes, in My Dictionary, or add links to articles on social bookmarking sites
  • incorporates quarterly additions and updates

ebrary adds new titles and new functionality to QuickView reader

ebrary no longer requires a downloaded Reader in order to take advantage of ebrary’s key book-reading functionalities. ebrary has just added significant capabilities to QuickView, the reader that is embedded within the browser and immediately available for reading books.  Downloads or installations are no longer necessary.

New features include the following:

  • Ability to customize InfoTools, which turns every word into a portal to additional information in online resources of your choice
  • Print an entire chapter at a time (up to session limits)
  • Choice of four citation preferences
  • Navigate to the previous or next page by double-clicking on the document
  • Ability to select text and navigate throughout documents by finger swiping on the iPad and iPhone
  • Enable RefWorks, EndNote or both at the institution level

 Additionally, end-users can easily share ebrary citations with peers at other institutions. Anyone who clicks on the URL to an ebrary title is automatically directed to the same document in their library’s ebrary collection (if available).

NEW E-BOOKS ADDED TO UML COLLECTION
ebrary has added over 1,100 new multidisciplinary e-books to the Academic Complete collection that is available to UML users.  The new titles are available today via the ebrary site, or you can preview a list of the new titles on the ebrary site.

MIT CogNet adds 40 new eBook titles

MIT CogNet has announced the addition of 40 new book titles to the CogNet Library, all published in 2007 and 2008. This now brings the total eBook count to over 525 titles.

In addition, CogNet contains 10 major reference works plus full text from six MIT Press Journals along with abstracts from 25 journals from other publishers.

Developed by The MIT Press, MIT CogNet is an online location for the brain and cognitive science community’s scientific research and interchange. Since breaking ground in 2000, MIT CogNet has become an essential resource for those interested in cutting-edge primary research across the range of fields concerned with understanding the nature of the human mind.

Credo Reference added as new online resource

UMass Lowell Libraries has added Credo Reference as a new online resource.

Credo Reference is an award-winning online database that allows users the ability to search across hundreds of reference titles from over 70 different publishers covering every major topic, including art, medicine, history, technology, literature and more. Overall, the collection contains over 3 million entries; 200,000 audio pronunciation files; 40,000+ art, science, and medical images; and 90,000 atlas images of places and geographic features throughout the world, all fully integrated and intelligently cross-linked.

For the next two months all of Credo’s 479 reference works will be fully available for UML users. Beginning in June, however, the UML subscription will be limited to following 100 selected reference titles:

Cambridge University Press has provided UMass Lowell Libraries 30-day trial access to their newly launched Cambridge Books Online Collection. For access to the trial, please visit the libraries’ Database Trials and New Resouces web page. 

Cambridge Books Online was launched just last month with an initial offering of over 6,000 front & backlist titles from Cambridge University Press. More books are added daily with over 10,000 titles expected by Spring 2010. Content covers many fields of contemporary scholarship, including world-renowned books in science, technology and medicine, as well as the humanities and social sciences.

All titles are available in PDF format and downloadable to a personal computer.

ACLS Humanities E-Book web site considered best in humanities

The ACLS Humanities E-Book web site just received a rave review from the prestigious Reviews in History of the Institute of Historical Research, London.

As Eileen Gardiner from HEB explains in a recent email announcement, “Mark Herring of Winthrop University traces the history of Humanities E-Book, its place within the scholarly mission of ACLS, its broad-base coalition of university presses and learned societies, its emphasis on the quality of the collection, its user-friendly interface and search engine, innovative XML titles, very reasonable pricing and its close attention to details such as free MARC records, citation methods and other metadata. The review gives ACLS and HEB the highest praise for their work within the digital humanities:
