UMass Lowell will be upgraded to the new ebrary e-book Reader the week of September 15th.

The new ebrary online Reader was developed with extensive input from researchers and debuts on the ebrary platform in early August 2014. The user experience features:

  • Clearer user permissions and information on ebooks for patrons
  • Intuitive navigation to locate popular features faster
  • Higher text quality and display options for better readability
  • Streamlined tasks such as copy, print, download and in-book search
  • Enhanced support for accessibility needs (coming in Q4).

In addition, ebrary has evolved their mobile experience to use the popular Bluefire app for offline reading on iOS (iPad and iPhone) and Android devices. Given this, ebrary has officially retired their dedicated mobile apps. To download the Bluefire app simply visit the App Store or Google Play.

For more information and screenshots of the new reader, view this ProQuest ebrary LibGuide. Also available is a PowerPoint download and an overview YouTube video.

Knovel to release new platform on August 15

Knovel is releasing its new platform on August 15. The new site  provides major upgrades to Knovel’s core features. Specifically, the new platform includes smarter search functionality and an answer-centric user interface that reflects how customers use Knovel. The emphasis is on helping users to find answers quickly and efficiently.

Key features include:

  • A new intuitive search that improves the speed of search results’ returns as well as their accuracy and relevance of results.
  • Updated search algorithm – Knovel has updated its algorithm to ensure answers are more easily discoverable and results are more relevant.
  • Faceted search results – users can view and filter search results to one of many Knovel content types — including interactive tables, text sections, material datasheets, conference proceedings, engineering cases and more.
  • Search within results – users can refine searches and use the breadcrumb trail to view and navigate between search sets.
  • Search snippets – users can scan results in context (not section headings) to determine relevance.
  • Data Search – New wizard functionality enables users to drag and drop field names from a Properties taxonomy. As criteria are added, users can see the volume of relevant results along the way. Users can locate critical numeric range values of properties with complete control over units.
  • Updated, user-friendly interface – improves navigation and increases visibility of interactive tools and clearly displays subscription entitlements.
  • Entitlements are clearly indicated for both Browse and Search. Users can see the full breadth of Knovel’s product offering, or they can filter search results to show only what’s available with their subscription. Premium products are now listed on the browse page instead of simply embedded in Subject Area listings.
  • Faster text viewing – A new Web-based PDF viewer vastly reduces the download wait time compared to PDF readers that require installing to the desktop and can create compatibility problems with a browser.
  • Performance is High Priority – Knovel’s new platform is built on a new streamlined code base and powered by multiple data centers worldwide. Our global customer base can get faster access to answers, no matter where they are.
  • My Knovel now supports Shared Folders – Users can tag members of their work group or student team and share folders with links to saved titles, saved content, saved search queries and customized interactive content.

ebrary also announced that they will be adding 2,000 front-list titles from John Wiley & Sons to Academic Complete over the coming months.

Downloading

ebrary recently began offering downloads either of book chapters as PDFs or entire ebooks in digital format using Adobe Digital Editions (requires Adobe installation).

    • Up to 10 documents at a time per patron
    • By default, full-document downloading is only available for multi-user documents (not single-user-only documents), but admins can override this setting
    • Multi-user documents can be full-document downloaded for 14 days*

New Knovel Crude Oil Assay database

Knovel has introduced its new Crude Oil Assay interactive database and is providing it to Knovel subscribers for free access through January 11, 2013. After that date UMass Lowell users will maintain access to the Crude Oil Assay database as part of the library’s Knovel Oil & Gas subject group subscription.

The Crude Oil Assays Database is a unique, interactive compilation of physical and chemical properties covering over 200 crude oils commonly available on the world market. The data will be useful both in understanding how oil properties affect oil behavior in the refinery and in predicting one property value from another. Organized into multiple interactive tables, the database includes:

  • Composition and Key Properties
  • Kinematic Viscosities
  • Hydrocarbon Composition
  • SARA Analysis
  • Distillation Profile
  • Heating and Freezing Properties
  • Fuel Indices

Within each table, users can compare multiple crudes against each other and export the properties to Excel or tab-delimited text for further analysis. Columns in the tables can be repositioned to make comparison easier, values can be sorted and the tables can be filtered to hone in on the data most relevant to the task. All properties are disoverable via Knovel’s data search.

Additional features include:

-         The ability to compare multiple crudes in a single table

-          Coverage of heavy oil and tar sand bitumen

NetLibrary eBooks now Ebsco eBook Collection

The new Ebsco eBook Collection site is now live and available for access.

Last year Ebsco Publishing purchased the NetLibrary ebook platform. As of July 20, Ebsco has completed the rollover from the old NetLibrary platform to hosting the eBooks on the Ebscohost database platform. This new eBook Collection site shares the same interface design as all of the other Ebsco online databases.

UMass Lowell Libraries currently subscribes to 25 database titles from Ebsco, including popular sites such as Academic Search Premier, Business Source Premier, Historical Abstracts, and PsycInfo. Now when you search any of the regular Ebsco online databases, you can also easily add the eBook collection into a multi-database search.

The Ebsco eBook Collection contains over 5,000 titles. It can be searched in much the same manner that NetLibrary allowed, by keyword, date, author, title, ISBN, or publisher.  By clicking on the eBooks link in the top menu bar, users can also browse by subject category, Latest Added titles, and Featured Books.

With an Ebscohost account, available for free to all users, bookmarks and notes can be added for future reference. You can also add titles to folders for easy access. Only one user, however, can read a book at a time. When a book is opened by a user, it is effectively checked out and unavailable for others to use at that time.

For further information about using eBooks on the Ebsco site, please view this help page –
