I have been extremely impressed with the results found trying to do research about a Lowell (MA) athletic and war hero, James Scondras. The site has led me to countless stories about his accomplishments that appeared in the Lowell Sun. I am working on a story for Holy Cross College magazine. This resource has been invaluable.

  • I’ve been doing historical research using Internet Newspaper Archive for the last three weeks and have found it to be among the best Websites for this kind of research. It has a broad range of newspapers, with fairly good coverage of Massachusetts newspapers, including the Lowell Sun (dating back to 1878–it’s founding year). This resource would be useful to historians, social scientists, and faculty and staff doing community-based research. The search tools are fairly basic, but more than adequate to the tasks needed to uncover various primary source material. The download speed is reasonably fast and the pdf files are generally of good quality. I highly recommend that the UML Library system picks up this Website for the long term.

  • Searching the Lowell Sun through this Newspaper Archive database found great articles for two Lowell research projects. 1830s — Merrimack Company – landscaping and gardening for researchers exploring early Green and Environmental Engineering by textile companies in Lowell. 1920-30s — Old City Hall – usage and building history for a researcher working on a coorporate history.
