Naxos Music Library trial

Naxos Music Library is available to the UMass Lowell community during the month of November. For a direct link to the trial, please view the library’s Database Trials & New Resources page.

Naxos Music Library (NML) offers streaming music from nearly 40,000 CDs from the catalogs of more than 50 classical, jazz and world music labels with more labels joining every month.

Among the labels whose catalogs are included in the service are leading independent classical
labels such as BIS, Chandos, CPO, Haenssler, Hungaroton, Marco Polo, Vanguard Classics, VOX and, of course,
Naxos. World music content is provided by ARC, Celestial Harmonies and others; and there is also jazz, film music,
nostalgia, classic and contemporary rock content.

The aim of NML is to eventually offer access to every work of classical music ever recorded and to become the
ultimate resource in the classical music field. In future, users will also be able to view the instrumentation
of all orchestral and chamber music works and to access comprehensive analyses of all the most important works.

Resources offered by NML include synopses of over 700 operas, a pronunciation guide for composer and artist names and a glossary of musical terms. A comprehensive online encyclopedia of classical music is in development.

Ever since a professor recommended taking a look at this database, I have been using it every single day. There is so much material that is extremely useful and relevant to music students. Not only are there such a wide range of recordings, but also useful background information. I hope to be able to continue using this valuable resource.

  • After talking to my teachers, the one thing they all wish they could change in their practice habits when they were younger was to listen to recordings more. Listening to recordings of great professionals is paramount in developing a good sound concept. As a leading collection of some of the best recordings in the world, Naxos is an essential tool in a musician’s development.

  • Awesome!

I found this website to be a great resource, as a music performer, for listening to classical musical recordings as a reference point of style and technique! This website is also great for any of us in the UML ensembles, as it provides quality listening examples of most of the band repertoire in one convenient place!

  • This site is a fantastic resource. Please keep this going and I promise to spread the word!

  • I have already used this site more than I have used any of the other of the Library Resources (except the e-journals). This site is amazing, and has everything that any music major will ever need! Especially those of us who are in Music Ed. It is a giant resource and one that is extremely useful. Please keep the Naxos site longer than a trial!
